Use a Stir Plate to increase the growth rate and size of your yeast starter. A stir plate helps drive off CO2 and keeps the starter oxygenated throughout the entire process. It results in dramatic improvements in cell count and overall yeast health which results in better beer.

Seems to work quite well, was easily able to grow up my starter for a bitter I was making. A 2L flask fits on it quite well, but the bar really rattled around. To fix this, I put a pair of o-rings on the bar, now it's nice and quiet.
I haven't had a blow off, but I used a couple of drops of Fermcap-S in my starter to prevent frothing up. Based on the previous review, this is probably a good idea. Also, since the o-rings raised the magnet a bit, it didn't always seem to look in as well, so I supplemented the spinning magnet with a pair of 1" rare earth magnets (one on each end).
If you don't muffle the bar it will probably drive you a bit crazy.
Works, but has drawbacks

First of all, the stir plate works. It's capable of doing some heavy duty stirring with a 1-2 L flask. If you're making starters for anything beyond 5gal or above 1.05, you're going to want a 5L flask to avoid blow offs.
The 5L flask significantly protrudes over the plate and can be difficult to centre without having the stir bar thrown. In addition, if you have a blow off, there is zero protection for the magnet motor which will quickly become gummed up with starter. This means you have to dial up the power to move the motor, which then spins too quickly and throws off the stir bar.
If you do get this, don't bother using it with a 1 or 2L flask. Jump right to the 5L to avoid blow offs altogether. Cleaning this is a massive pain
